In the after screenshot the cursor is fully to the right of the "f", but
it now intersects with the subscript. Also, being fully to the right of
the "f" is different from the cursor placement in text mode of an
emphasized "f".

This is not something that *I* intended, but it is actually better IMO. Consider for example the string ffffff in a formula. LyX 2.2 will set it "nicely" and 2.3 will look ugly, but 2.3 has it right. There is no kerning beween letters in math.
