If several table cells are selected but *not* the whole table, insets
cannot be inserted. I suggest that instead they can be inserted and the
obvious mode of insertion seems to be to apply the inset for each table
cell individually.
One possible use case I just came across was that I wanted to Alert two
columns of a larger table in beamer. I had to go through each cell and
click on the Text Style > Alert. Would be nice to not having to do that.

By the way, did you know that "Beamer" is the German word for
"projector"? Germans have so many funny words that sound English but are
not. Another is "Handy" which is the word for "mobile phone".
