A quick question on the "too many options" issue. I believe that quite
many LyX users like to have many options to fit LyX according to their
desires. So I am wondering what your worry about too many options is.
Maybe it is that many other users will be put off by LyX because it
looks too complicated?

A way to say whether an option is necessary: does LibreOffice have such
an option? Do people complain about that?

In Linux, this is a big difference between KDE (so many options that one
cnnot find the right one) and Gnome (sometimes not enough options).

Adding options is often a sign of indecision. When the option is not
there, people do not complain. But if it is removed, you will obviously
find somebody to complain about it :)

For example, nobody remembers why we have the \show_banner option or
\screen_font_sizes options. Or the three different interfaces for
editing math macros. But it is just bikesheding IMO.

Also never underestimate the cost of an option. In this case it is low,
but there are strings to translate and screen real estate to find.

I see. However, my argument for having non-userinterface options that can be manually set in the preferences file (or in some preample like blank space in the preferences gui) seems to survive your objection.

In this way one might be able to get rid of options without putting off those "advanced" users who like those options.
