I actually re-read the original lyx-devel thread and understand now that
what you want is to have a non-black cursor when the background is dark.
My patch in contrast tries very hard to keep the cursor black :)
I was confused by your libreoffice example, where the problem was not the
background, but the written text. Now, I see that libreoffice does invert
the cursor over dark backgrounds too.
To be frank, this makes the job easier. I am still not convinced that an
option is required. We already have too many of these. I'll attach below a
simplified patch.

A quick question on the "too many options" issue. I believe that quite
many LyX users like to have many options to fit LyX according to their
desires. So I am wondering what your worry about too many options is.
Maybe it is that many other users will be put off by LyX because it
looks too complicated? If this is the issue there maybe be a way to have
both. Some settings could either be hidden until one shows the
"Advanced" settings", or the advanced settings could be documented
somewhere but without a user interface. So basically one would have to
edit the preferences file manually which should be no problem for
"advanced" users.
