FWIW I see this with 2.2.2. Usually the number have a larger font than letters. If I write 2 in math mode: $2$ with preview on I get the full page preview with a single character on it. It is weird in the sense that other expressions work and it is not obvious to me what causes this or if the cache is involved. Or some interaction with texlive 2016 and the preview. :-) Regards, -- José Abílio
