LyX 2.2 provides two layout files, aastex.layout and aastex6.layout
(for backwards compatibility and people still having the old class file).

aastex.layout says:

# Note: aastex.cls was replaced by aastex6.cls (v.1 2016/02/16)
# in the CTAN and TeXLive "aastex" package in march 2016.
# The new "aastex6.layout" depends on aastex6.cls but inputs this
# file for the definitions (cf. LyX ticket #10027)

and aastex6.layout says:

...
# Version 6.0 31/03/16 - Stub for AASTeX 6.0:
# new layout file aastex6.layout, because
# aastex.cls was renamed to aastex6.cls (2016/02/16)
# (cf. LyX ticket #10027)
#
# TODO: - support for new commands (see below)
# - aastex6.cls loads hyperref (with pre-set options) and url
# -> option clash if "Use Hyerref" is selected in Document>Settings

It seems that AASTEX 6 has no entry in Help>LaTeX config.
-> this is a bug.

However, the new document class
American Astronomical Society (AASTeX v. 6)
is available under Document>Settings>Document class
and is also used by File>New from Template aastex6.lyx.

There you also find the note:

The AASTeX document class uses a different name since version 6.0
(2016/02/16). Depending on the version installed on your system, set
the document class to American Astronomical Society (AASTeX v. 6) or
American Astronomical Society (AASTeX v. 5).

  New features (cf.
  http://journals.aas.org/authors/aastex/revisionhistory.html) are only
partially supported by LyX (see http://www.lyx.org/trac/ticket/10027).

Upgrade of existing documents can done manually -- switching
Document>Settings>Document class
