I am sorry, it was because of a false command in my preamble. I guess I was not patient enough when I removed it to wait for the re-rendering of the instant preview. Wouldn't it be nice to let the user know whether the instant preview is still ongoing and whether it was successful or not?

Most confusing to me was that it only affected a part of my previews the x's. The explanation seems to be this: LyX tries to create previews, starting with the first in the document. In my document that was an x. Since it wasn't successful in generating the preview it stopped. But it seems that it still had the temporary renderings of the other formulas stored elsewhere. So it used them for the other (unchanged) previews.

Maybe it would be better to, *in the case of an error*, not use the temporary stored previews but rather show no previews at all?
