Not necessary but helpfull. It would make the documents more "robust":
- a user could try out compilation with Xe/LuaTeX and non-TeX fonts without
tripping over the "missing character error" and the need to search for a
suitable font.
You know my opinion. the docs are to describe LyX's features. Thus they
are designed to read them in LyX or to press the view button and read
them as PDF. They are NOT designed to change them. If you do it is your
business.
Note that on Windows you can even not modify the doc files because one
cannot modify the install folder.
Setting alternative system fonts in the source docs will help the "secondary
use" without affectiong the "primary use".
Well, what is a system font? Every system has its own system fonts. Win
Vista uses other fonts than Win 7 or Win 10. I read that e.g. Times New
Roman of Win Vista covers other (less) chars than the version in Win 10.
I don't see a reason why we need to invest much time to keep the
UserGuide compilable for fonts and settings a user might use/change on
systems we don't know.
