I would not make this a feature of the info-inset. It's too tricky to
implement: you would have to make clear that info-inset must not be used
with a "normal" space in front, would have to think about use at the
start of a line or in a table, ... 

Rather use protected spaces consistently in the sources if required. (I
am all for consistency but have no preference for protected or ordinary
space).

Here we differ. Icons should be designed to be readable if they have the
size of readable text.
