Well, Uwe's point is that if someone uninstalls LyX, but leaves the
preferences. Then a year later, he might reinstall LyX and copy over the
old preferences. In the meantime, the dependencies like Python might
have moved and the old path points to nowhere. Conclusion: LyX is broken.

This is only a problem because the python path is in preferences. And it 
is not the user who put it there in the first place.
