I thought the problem was that if someone changed the path prefix in the preferences to something that e.g., makes LyX not find python anymore, any new installation that copies over these settings from a previous install will cause the new installed LyX to be broken.
If somebody breaks the preferences, it is his problem afterwards :) JMarc
