Hi Jicksy,

welcome to LyX!

It's great to hear you are interested in the round trip conversion
project. There is currently an intense and ongoing discussion about
the project on the
lyx-developers list. See [1]. That is a good starting point on the
current state of the project and the various design decisions the
developers are considering.

As for getting familiar with LyX i ngeneral and with its code base in
particular, I would recommend installing LyX (and TeX distribution
such as TeXLive or MikTex, depending on your platform) and getting
used to the program as a user. If you're not familiar with LyX I would
suggest going though the Tutorial (available from the Help Menu) and
taking a look at the User's guide (from the same menu). As for LaTex,
this project requires at least a basic undestanding of what LaTex is,
how it interacts with LyX on the one hand and with the Tex engine(s)
on the other hand. If you've never used LaTeX before, I would
recommend looking at "The not so Short Guide to LaTeX" which is
available in every Tex distribution (search for lshort.pdf on your
hard drive after you have installed TeX, or type "texdoc lshort" in a
terminal if you are on linux).

Once you have a general understanding of how LyX works and interacts
with LaTeX, I would recommend looking at the bug tracker [2] as a way
to get familiar with the code base. In particular, search for bugs
marked "easyfix" and see if you can contribute a patch.

And do not hesitate to ask questions on the Lyx-devel list!

Cheers,

Stefano
