many thanks for the input. The string as given works fine for Lyx 1.1.6; even
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults/LyX is parsed - this is what makes me happy. However,
two remarks:
- the old version of mine (1.1.4 fix3; S.u.S.E supplied binary) does *not*
accept the strings you recommended but insists in the old writing (height, width
...)
- where can the information you gave me be found in the manuals (does rtfm work
in this case?) As I readily mentioned, a " grep geometry ./* " within the
doc-directory (1.1.6pre2) gives no results; according to the information you
supplied this should not happen (?).

if you really want to see the pictures above - use some font
with constant spacing like courier! :-)
