It would not, as you would have no reference in which column you currently are. Anyone working on horizontal scrolling should perhaps first study (and try to improve, as it still has some glitches) vertical scrolling (in big tables). Especially when different dynamic toolbars start to open. If I remember correctly, LyX is not good in telling you the dimensions of the cells in a table, or something like that.
