This is a known sort of issue. It has to do with the encoding of the
BibTeX file not matching the document encoding. See:

You are likely to have other problems, however, even with your
workaround, since the encoding of the LaTeX file and the encoding of the
BibTeX file need to match. The best policy is to use only ASCII in the
BibTeX file, if you can: to use LaTeX constructs like \"a instead of
extended characters.
