+1. "@" is not nice character and must be escaped in some scenarios.
i would suggest to use rXXXX string in commit message. more about this
in a separate thread.

<silly idea>
pruning most of the strings remerge commits in trunk could substantially
decrease the size of the repo, and has nice side effect for searching
in history via git log -p. would it make sense to play with it?
