This is not so easy.
But we should first define how to set (dependent on some suffix): 
        Default value for "-userdir" command line param
        Environment variable LYX_DIR_...
        Package name (so as to allow to install simultaneously different 
versions)
        Executable names (tex2lyx..., lyx..., lyxclient...) and corresponding 
manuals (lyx....1, ,)
        Installation directory
        
Also the content of the manuals (lyx....1 lyxclient....1 tex2lyx....1) should 
reflect the changes.

Maybe we need something for each of them? As I understood, this was what Peter 
had in mind some time ago.

No. From my POV it could go, but it is not my doing.
But it's easier to handle if the executables don't have suffix. (manual names, 
manual contents)

For me, I would only have to rewrite my wrapper-scripts.
