Shouldn't we start with 2.1 first?
Yes.
This thread is growing fast and I don't know if this is the right place for
features, but I've been thinking of some features it would be nice to have in
LyX:
- scripting: it would be great to allow community to contribute with plugins,
maybe for some specific LaTeX packages using a simple language as Python
- "start page": a list of the most frequent actions on the background of the
work area, like in Qt Creator, and all the Adobe products (Flash, Dreamweaver
and so on), e.g. "create a presentation!", "create a letter!", recent documents,
tip of the day and so on; [1] [2]
- simplified option menu with search (already WIP) and something like
simple/advanced mode, like in VLC [3]
Maybe we need a wiki page for ideas.
I'll do my best to develop these features but can't have an idea of the target
milestone.

I'm replying in order reflecting the priority I would put in each
feature you suggested.
I like the start page idea the best.
I haven't looked at your patch for the simple/advanced mode yet, but I
hope to get to it. It would certainly help to not have menus and
document settings so cluttered as it is.
For the scripting, I suspect casual users would not touch it because
they don't know the language/don't want to break something. But I might
be wrong.
It would be interesting to define output routines in .layout files.
