One simple question: did you enable the "instant preview" of math
formulas? Its a time sink too.

Also the auto-completion should be off on less powerfull (and power
hungry) computers - but this is more an issue editing delays rather
than loadup.

Also, the source view takes time to compute - turn off if not needed
or disable the auto-update.

Actually, LyX 1.6 works even reasonably on my OLPC laptop (running Debian
from a SD card), I would not go back to 1.5,
