iirc this never worked with previewing inset because latex-preview package
failed to produce any output (at least i remember Vincent unsuccessfully tried
tikz). no time invetigate more, but maybe enh request for preview-latex
package?
I have a preview inset which contains \psfrag replacements in ERT and an
eps graphic. The replacements appear correctly in the generated preview
if I use the "legacy" preview mechanism found in LyX's script folder.
This uses dvips and gs instead of dvipng.
The showstopper is that this chokes when trying to preview display
equations, at least for me, and I don't know what could be causing it.
