Moin devolopers,I have two points to propose for the LyX layout files for tufte-latex, here the => second problem, regarding both classes (handout and book) is:
2.\setcounter{secnumdepth}{2} (or 1, 3 etc.) not working with the LyX layouts.
Surely: chapter (only book), section and subsection numbering is not intented by the creators of the tufte-latex. But nevertheless the possibility is given, when one needs it for his/her purposes.
With the first tufte-handout.layout for LyX, this possibility was given, too. But in the new ones it lacks. In the LyX document windows you can now only choose the asterics sectioning (\chapter*, \section*, \subsection*), that is LyX prevents an given command in the preamble
\setcounter{secnumdepth}{<num>} (e. g. 1, 2, 3)to be executed in compiling. Because in the latex code it creates, all the possible sectioning commands are tranlated with asterix, i. e. prefiguring _not_ to nummerate the chapter, sections …
Again, you can work arround this by TeX insetting in the document window, avoiding to choose Chapter-, Section- etc. heading and inset it in the Standard style be TeX insets \chapter{} etc., but that's not LyX is made for.
My opinion is, people using the tufte classes will have read the short tufte samples at least, so knowing that section numbering is not prefered by the tufte class creators, but should be allowed - also in LyX - to choose this option with the short \setcounter command (s. a.) within the preamble.
My proposal is therefore, to amend the tufte-book and -handout LyX layouts to this (myself not feeling able to do this).
For demonstration of the lack, I add a handout minimal example .lyx file. Regards, joachim -- Mac BacicTeX 2009 - TeXShop 2.29 / TeXworks 0.2.3 LyX 1.6.5 - MacBook Pro intel OSX 10.4.11 Tiger
