Dear colleagues,

I think it is time to finalize the next major LyX release. Pavel today
posted the first related issue - the version number. (I don't have a strong
opinion but as this version includes less new stuff than 1.6, we should
perhaps name it 1.7.)

The important issue is the roadmap:

- I would like to release a pre-release of current trunk in a few days if
I'm allowed to. Doing this has been proven suitable in the last 2 release
cycles.

- about6 weeks after this release we should release a feature-complete beta
version.
Although trunk may be close to ready on other platforms, there are
some serious problems on Mac. As I've reported before, I cannot do
things like insert citations or change the document preamble: when I
click "OK" on the dialog, the dialog disappears, but nothing changes
in the document.

I recently purchased a MacBook so that I'd have access to a Mac for LyX-related purposes. Can you send me a private message about what I need to do to be able to compile LyX on Snow Leopard? I.e., how to install the Qt development stuff, etc? I am a total newbie on Mac.

One other Mac issue I've noticed is speed, which is noticeably slower
on trunk than branch. This is true especially of [...] speed of
opening new documents (the latter of which takes 5 seconds as opposed
to 2 seconds for a document template that includes only my
bibliographical database).

This is probably due to layout format changes. We saw versions of this on other platforms, too.
