I have no problem to build a LyX binary from 1.6.5svn.
You could try Jean-Marc's latest patch (either apply it to branch or to the
1.6.4.1 sources):

Ok, this weekend I had the time to work on it and can confirm that my checkout
of BRANCH_-1_6_X revision 31956(?) with Jean-Marc's latest patch applied is
working. Autosave is ok and spell checking too (with ispell I got no error
message).
A new problem is the loss of svn access. I'm using the default svn client of
Leopard
(version 1.4.4) and have to replace it apparently. But I have no idea where to
get it...
So I have to solve it somehow. That's why I cannot give the revision number for
sure.
