I agree, in fact I was already thinking that the word "main" confuses
with the "master" one, and I find "document" to be a much more
meaningful name here.

myself what a non-document buffer could be and how I could select a
buffer that's not the document buffer.
That's probably because you didn't play yet with the Find LyX...
feature. Just type Ctrl-S-f (or select the Modify->Find LyX... menù
voice). Now you have three distinct WorkAreas and corresponding buffers
in front of you. You can select simply by clicking (focusing) on anyone
of them.
