I think the problem lies with the new menu code. I've tried running LyX
with 'setenv LANG es' (I use tcsh), and everything worked in Spanish
except the menus. For example, one you have a new document, the
'Layout->Document' form is in Spanish, but the menu name is in English.
For the menus there should be a decision on how to translate these. The
(English) default definitions are in the file lib/ui/default.ui .
I would like to suggest having ${LANG}_default.ui files for each language.
Then LyX::ReadUIFile (in lyx_main.C), if the filename is 'default', and
LANG is set in the environment, and a file named '${LANG}_default' exists,
read that file and not default.ui .
I don't know much about i18n, and there may be a better solution using
gettext.
