Oops.  By cosmic coincidence, as soon as I sent this, I got an update 
from Trac on bug 5880, about which I had totally forgotten.  Looks like 
the same thing.  I've upload the zip file to Trac and added a comment to 
the bug report.  Sorry for the noise.
