Hi all, I'm not familar with the coding of LyX in any case - and so don't misinterpret my comment as any kind of paternalism. LyX is a worthy successor of SciWord, open source, and full of excellent ideas and work.
I have the same suspicion as Vincent: Each user input inside the master(not only keyboard typing; mouse action, e.g., selecting longer parts of text, does the same!!!) causes some havy checks or updating mechanism related to the child docs. Probably my guess is much too simple: If it is a problem wheather a file is loaded/changed or not (as Vincent mentioned), why not setting a valid-flag as soon as all files are loaded/checked, and or check only files which are not currently loaded or already valid. (Eeach child needs its own flag then). There should be a limited number of user actions, which can made an already checked file invalid. I think a similar mechanism can be applied for each "list" of the outliner (if not already existent). Hard disk: I have the effect already seen on 2 Laptops, and 1 Standard PC (all WinXP). So I don't think it's related to the HD. Additionally, the HD-Light only flashes once (very short) after the first key is pressed and then not again. But typing remains unuseable slow. This hints, that there is a file system access each time I start typing, but then? Processor load while fast typing inside the master: significant higher, but below 50%; does not increase while fast typing; so I assume slowness is not only related to pure CPU usage Memory usage: far below any limit Hope it help's Zardoz -- Aufgepasst: Sind Ihre Daten beim Online-Banking auch optimal geschützt?
