haven't followed the thread, but i would be in favor of having one align 
function and apply the alignment to the selection (just like we do now with 
table lines): if you want to change the alignment of a column, select the 
column and then set the alignment.

Conceptually, I think it makes sense to have two. I can imagine scenarios
where one wants to change the alignment of a column from within a multicolumn
cell (just not by default maybe).

Apart from that, the GuiApplication changes were necessary anyway, given that
we want to support command-alternatives in the toolbar.
