i personally would really welcome an icon set based on a consistent palette and design. at the moment lyx is like an old scruffy family dog; you grew up with him, you love the beast, but he's not the best looking dog on the block... i also suspect that getting and maintaining a consistent look across platforms based on stock items would be a much bigger effort since many icons we need are not part of the available stocks and will need to be designed from scratch. so this is not not something i would advise. using a maintained and ok licensed set of stock items (openoffice?) and add on this seems more manageable... my 2c of course, ed.
