Generally, I'd say such attempts are welcome. However, given the fact that LyX 
runs on several platforms, some of which use themes, the problem is to find an 
icon set that looks equally good everywhere.

Rather than replacing our (also KDE-derived) icon set with another one, it 
would be worth investigating into the use of stock icons, i.e. using the icon 
theme currently used by the OS or DE.

For Linux, one would probably have to follow freedesktop.org's recommendations 
(that would at least work with recent GNOME and KDE 4, i.e. Oxygen):

which sontains rather detailed technical hints.

For the other OSes, I don't know.
