The export-to-directory bit actually exists in very rough form. I

The main obstacle here is philosophical: We have never been able to
find an approach to embedding that didn't have what at least several
people (different in each case) regarded as serious flaws. So, well,
we could have that discussion again. Maybe with less heat and more
light this time.
Yes, I know, we have had this discussion before. I was planning to
compile and transform the LyX1.6 roadmap wiki page on Embedding to
streamline the development for 2.0. Right now, I'm not in the position
to do it, but next year, I will try to collect some opinions, some
existing solutions and a possible roadmap or compromising solutions..
Fresh blood should mean fresh ideas, which will help.
