The export-to-directory bit actually exists in very rough form. I once
had a private branch that did a simple sort of packaging, and even trunk
had two different forms of embedding at different times. The main
obstacle here is philosophical: We have never been able to find an
approach to embedding that didn't have what at least several people
(different in each case) regarded as serious flaws. So, well, we could
have that discussion again. Maybe with less heat and more light this time.
