I also thought this, but Günter pointed me to the right typography that there is no space between abbreviations:

While correcting this, I saw that most of the cases "e.g." already didn't use a space. The space was mainly introduced, by non-native speaker like me ;-).

Btw. in German a thin space between "z.B." is correct.
