What's wrong with the version coming with my distribution?
Why do you ask? Nothing is wrong, MiKTeX is just an alternative for
TeXLive. It is more user friendly than TeXLive with it's package manager
and the install missing packages on the fly feature.
So the main advantage is using a package system that's different (and
- bold guess - incompatible?) with my distribution's packaging?
Actually, the package manager was ported to Linux a while back (I just
recently added a blurb about it to the wiki). I've used it once on
Ubuntu, and it downloaded and installed the package correctly. AFAIK
LaTeX packages are generally OS-agnostic. Does the TeXLive package
manager install individual LaTeX packages (as MiKTeX does), or is it
still the case that you have to install a collection to get one little
package?
