This is not correct, please read the user guide. To have short titles, use the menu Insert -> Short title.

What? For whom do I write them then? Not reading manuals but find the things out by try and error and/or stealing people time at mailing lists is something I cannot understand.

If I would like to change the way a section heading appears
in the TOC, I would start by right-clicking a section heading
and look for a menu item that does what I want.

So, shouldn't we blame ourselves that there isn't a context-menu item called "Insert Short Title" ?

No, of course we should add a context menu for that.
