Because many XML parsers can't deal with DTDs or schemas, please make the DTD or schema validation only, so a simple parser can parse apart the XML. In my recent adventure with Mandriva's bad Memoir package, the only way I could troubleshoot the problem was to use Vim on the file. There are certain activities for which the LyX front end just doesn't cut it, and Vim or programmatic approaches become very necessary.
