You assume wrong. Default means whatever font the class uses as

OK thanks. And do we know what is this font? If yes, we should at
least indicate what Default means.
There's no way *in general* to find out what the default font of a
class is. But each class is hand-crafted for LyX, right?
No, the classes are used unmodified.
This is one of the reasons
that LM should not be used per default on new documents, as you
can clash with what the real default is.
Couldn't we change the document classes that load CM by default to
load LM by default and to fall back to CM if LM is not available?
Certainly can't change the class :)
But loading the LM fonts *only* if we knew that the CM fonts are
default would be a good idea, disregarding the rest of this thread
that discusses why you don't want to do that.
I really hate the software that pretends to know better than me
and changes defaults behind my back.
I more or less agree.
Who wants LM fonts by default
can do that quite easily using "Save as Document Defaults", so I
don't understand why this discussion is still lasting so long ;-)
The point is that a lot of users don't know that LM is better and don't
know what to choose. Most user don't touch this font business out of
ignorance. I know, this is in the manual, but such settings should be
self evident IMHO.
One way to ease the font decision making would be to tag the LM font as
a better CM font directly in the combo. Or maybe add a description field
in the font tab that will explain each of selection.
