I just ran in to the issue discussed in the lyx-users thread "How to set the
printer page size to letter without altering the layout"[1]. Specifically,
changing the page size in Lyx's Document Settings usually does not affect
the page size of the pdf produced by pdflatex. I say usually because if you
happen to choose one of the sizes that isn't an option for \documentclass
the page size will be set correctly with the geometry package. I was able to
force the usage of \geometry by setting custom margins in Document Settings,
even setting empty margins works. The current behavior, however, is
extremely confusing.

I wasn't able to find a bug for this issue should I open one? My impression
from the referenced thread is that this may not be trivial to fix.
Nonetheless, this seems like a fairly severe usability hazard, especially
with pdflatex as the default pdf backend. If a fix seems unlikely in the
near future I'll go ahead and add a note to the wiki, hopefully saving the
next poor soul some googling.

BTW I'm using 1.5.4 on OS X so if this has already been addressed please
forgive the noise.

Best,

Jed
