Partial workaround: start lyx 1.5.4.x with the geometry parameter (see lyx
--help) to initially set the geometry. Then you can kind of drag the corner of
the window repeatedly to resize it and then lyx seems to be halfway functional.

I still have the problem with the illegible light yellow menu text on 1.5.4.x
and 1.6svn.
