Would it be possible to add a preference that would turn off the text

+1
Already implemented and commited.
Thanks!
It would perhaps be even better simply to have a "turn off text-mode
completion altogether" preference that would also stop word collection.
I'm a bit worried about what this will do to slow machines, e.g., my
very old but much loved 750MHz PIII Vaio laptop.
I was about to write something similar...
I hope it's not needed. If it is, the implementation should be
improved. But I will think about it. There is not much sense to keep a
table of words which is not used.
I was about to say I'd test this on my old laptop some time soon, but
then I thought about how long it would take to compile LyX on it. Maybe
I'll wait for the 1.6.alpha release and either build a 32 bit rpm myself
or hope someone else will do it. In any event, it's certainly true that,
if text completion is disabled, we might as well disable collection.
Obviously, this isn't nearly as critical for math mode.
And let me not neglect to say: Despite the fact that I'd rather chew off
my arm than use text completion, this is very impressive work, and lots
of people will love it.
