most i can say that automake 1.10 and autoconf 2.61 work here.

try to ask other mac people about the version of autotools they use.
(i'm not even sure autools are the best way how to proceed under
mac os).

For what it's worth, I have automake 1.10 and autoconf 2.61.

Thanks, updating automake did the trick. I enclose a patch for the install instructions file (where also 1.5 -> 1.6 is addressed). Could someone please apply if it's OK?
