Sorry for the late reply, but we are all really busy right now and so
probably one waited for the other to reply to the mail, as we really don't
have any spellchecker-expert in the core-team anymore.
This means that the spellchecker code actually in LyX remains as is until
we have someone who wants to work on it to make it better.
We ARE interested in any code making this interface cleaner, but as told
above we just don't have the time to work on it ourself. I would give you
all the help you need to implement it if you want.

Why do you use this signals? Why do you assume ownership on it? I don't
think a library should hold ownership of public used signals.

As told above we would be happy to clean up the code there or at least
have a module which can be linked in instead of the actuall spellchecker
module (depending on if on the system the pspell library is available),
this can be done with configure-magic and should be done as not on all
system the pspell library will be available.
This said I'll wait for your move and will give you any information
I can give you (I really am not so familiar with signals) and will
do inquiries on the other developers for knowledge, also I will test
the stuff you send me and see if it works.
