Hi all

I have a few issues/bugs with LyX 1.5.3 that I'd like to comment on.

Firstly, the 'compressed' feature for LyX documents seems like a problem
when using LyX files in a CVS/SVN repository, because one can easily
change a file's type from binary to text and back again. This causes
havoc with tools that attempt to determine a file's text-or-binary
status from the mime type, and recently when I converted a CVS
repository to SVN, causes corruption of a compressed LyX document that
had, on the basis of its file extension, been assigned the mime-type of
'text/x-lyx'. Can I suggest that the 'compressed' flag be part of the
Save As dialog, and compressed files be given a different file
extension, such as '.lyxz' (following the lead of '.svg' and '.svgz').

Next, there seems to be some strangeness is the expand/hide behaviour of
footnotes. I find that when I click on a hidden footnote 'button', I
often get an expansion of the text selection happening, rather than the
intended result of the footnote becoming visible.

Next, there is still a problem with the error reporting feature in LyX
when using multiple-file compound documents. If Latex reports an error,
then LyX attempts to highlight the relevant part of the text which is
causing the problem. But it never works correctly if the error has
occurred in a sub-document. What's worse is that the dialog box gives no
information about which file the error is reported for, no the line
number, so I can't even go and hunt for the offending text manually. I
have to resort to exporting Latex files then running Latex directly from
the commandline instead, which seems like a lot of both (FWIW I had an
error that seemed to be something to do with conversion of unicode
characters between a LyX 1.4 and a LyX 1.5 document, but it was rather
hard to identify exactly what was causing the problem). This has been a
long-standing problem. Looking at the console output of Latex, I can see
that it might be quite difficult to parse its output to determine what
it's actually saying, so perhaps that's why.

Finally, I am pleased to say that I'm at the track-changes stage of my
thesis (reviews and so on). This feature on the whole works very nicely.
My only comment is that when attempting to make changes to an inline
formula, the change tracking seems not to behave as it should. Also, if
I delete a formula, then it doesn't get the usual red strike-out, which
means you don't realise that you can't then edit it later on. Yes, there
some little message in the Status Bar, but it's not something that you
readily notice. Perhaps if a deleted formula could be given a pink
background or something, that would be clearer.

I think that LyX is coming along very well, thanks very much for all
your work, and keep it up!

Cheers
JP
