Yes.
You want a new "New..." that creates an empty unnamed document from the
default layout and/or template file.
Well we could do that and make a new "New from Template..." that does what
I wanted with a simple popup for selecting either a template file or a
document class. The file can be unnamed here also.
This then leaves us with a need to handle unnamed documents (autosave,
emergency-save and save-as need to be handled).
This then leaves us with a new "Open..." that can create a new named
document (emacs style) and which should/must popup the new "New from
Template..." popup. (That is, the new "Open..." is really a slightly
better version of the old "New...")
