The right solution is probably to find literature about this kind of
issues. None of us is a professional UI designer, AFAIK.
"What should a UI look like?"   Minimize confusion by
making it consistent with the rest of the app, and preferably
quite a few other apps as well. Make exceptions only when
there is a reason, but don't be afraid in those cases.

There's none. Every three years or so there's a new paradigm that's not
too new and that will be deprecated a few months later.

Sure.  So there is a lot of time to save on skipping over trends.
