I think this is pretty old logic and everytime one trie to change
something in this area people start crying foul.

My prefered behaviour would be to just change type to eqnarray/align
and leave everything in the first cell including the cursor in the same
position. Then the user can run cell-split (used to be Ctrl-Tab)
afterwards.

<space> is sort of 'I am done'.

Really? I think 'leave innermost inset on <space>' has been there all
the time.
