The active user (i.e. the one running LyX) always has author id = 0. If I load a file that was previously edited by another person, the authors listed in the file will be recorded in the author list and their ids will be mapped to new ones. This is achieved by author_map in BufferParams.h.

IMHO all of this code is pretty clumsy with a bad cost/effect ratio. That's why I was looking for something cleaner that, unfortunately, has not became reality so far...
