I thought people may think it is related to the bibliography that will
appear in the document, and not to the bibtex database.

For the keyboard shortcuts, just add "|#A" or something like that
after the label.
For the text entry, add a text entry field on top/bottom of the "bibliography
keys" browser and arrange things so that the browser position updates
when typing in (you might want to have a look at what Juergen did in
his table popup). When the entered key does not exist, the browser
would just not have anything selected (or "[other]") but it should be
possible to enter the key anyway (as in: I have to remember to enter
it later).

Yes, but do these have logical meanings, rather than visual ones? Some
styles might decide to swap the text-after and text-before contents,
for example.
