Thanks for your response. For the TOC menu entry, 
I would suggest to launch the dialog from Edit->TOC automaticaly if some
limit on the total number has been reached which cannot be altered.

OK, this is my fault: I did not read the prettyref documentation in
great detail. Maybe it should be added in the user guide, since I guess
other people will run into the same misbehaviour. I will contribute this
to the FAQ  after I learned more about the prettyref package.
