FYI, I've been testing this patch quite extensively and I haven't seen
any problem.

i think that it might be quite straightforward to add popup menu's and
perhaps even iconpalettes to the toolbar, and to add such non standard
widgets it would help to have a proper separation of items, toolbar and
backend...
